Auf nach Finnland is here

Yet another Come to Finland-baby has been born. This time it is the German edition Auf nach Finnland. Plakate und Reisen 1851 - 1965. Translator is Regine Elsässer and essay contributor is travel writer Rasso Knoller.

In the German edition you will find several new poster treasures that were once produced to lure German travellers to Finland. Among the new material are some real pearls we have hunted down in archives in Berlin and Essen. (12.04.08)

100 % Finlande

The French edition of Come to Finland is now out! Publisher is Sektorn Press, which is our own company. The book will be used during Finland’s great cultural campaign in Paris during the spring.

And Finnairs travel magazine Blue Wings writes about the book in their February issue.

The new edition is here

Yippee! The second revised edition of Come to Finland’s English language version has now come out (21 January 2008).

We have added some new factual information about some of the posters in the new edition. These are facts that dedicated graphic artists and poster experts from around the world have provided us with during the past months. Our humble thanks to these enthusiasts!

In addition, there are three new graphic artists listed in the artist’s biography section at the end of the book, as well as translations of the poster slogans in the picture captions. And as we write in the new preface, ’the hunt goes on…’. To order the new Edition, please proceed to our Order-page.

The book becomes a Finnish image builder

Ministry sends Come to Finland to embassies around the world

The Finnish Foreign Ministry has put in an order for the bulk of the international version of Come to Finland.

On the 4th of December it was confirmed that the first edition of the book’s English version will become a part of the ongoing Finnish image building process. The Foreign Ministry will ship Come to Finland to Finland’s embassies around the world. Therefore a second edition is already under way.

Also the Finnish Business and Policy Forum (EVA) have ordered the book to use it as a gift to distinguished guests of EVA.

And finally...

Come to Finland was published on October 8th amongst asheer  media-frenzy. See how two Finnish poster legends met and enjoyed the book: Lasse Hietala and Erik Bruun.

Lost Finnish art treasures discovered

The book Come To Finland is a celebration to an over 100 year old Finnish art form, travel posters.

Finnish passion

Finland was already in the late 19th century an exotic travel destination among travellers who appreciated something new and different. Not only was Finland at that time a autonomous Grand Duchy with the Russian Czar as its ruler, the country was also “off the beaten track”, as one popular poster slogan stated almost one hundred years ago.

As you can see from the pictures, every poster was a labour of love - and early proof of the Finnish passion for graphical design. Furthermore, these posters documents the golden age of travelling.

Gold in the archives

As time went by, these early posters ended up in archives, basements and museums. Some material ended up in collections and museums outside Finland, e.g. National Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

All that will now change. Under the leadership of Finnish journalist and author Magnus Londen a comprehensive research project is taking place.

“It was really a coincident that I stumbled upon some beautiful Finnish posters from the 1930´s. Together with my friend Ant Simons we started juggling the idea of doing some new prints. But as we started looking into the matter, we realized that only a high quality book would do justice to this national art treasure.”

Sherlock Holmes at work

As you read this, the work with the Come To Finland-book is in full progress. Old posters are traced around the globe, facts about each poster are dug up and the graphical design of the book itself is planned.

The project is also presented to suitable financers. Come to Finland is a timeless book that:

  • Is the perfect gift for travellers, art aficionados and everyone who wants to return to times long gone.
  • Contains unique material never presented in this stylish way before.
  • Is a breathtaking and eye opening document of the exciting Finnish cultural heritage.

Two editions

The book will be published on October 8, 2007 and there will be two separate editions:

One Scandinavian edition in Swedish and Finnish and one International edition in English. The latter also contains bonus material; an essay about Finland and Finns by British author Diana Webster.
